what is 'hypophosphatemia - low blood phosphorus '?
Definition for hypophosphatemia
Hypophosphatemia is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally depleted level of phosphate in the blood.
more
Hypophosphatemia is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally depleted level of phosphate in the blood. This can be caused when malnourished patients are fed a large amount of carbohydrates which have a high phosphorus demand (refeeding syndrome).
Because a decrease in phosphate in the blood is often associated with an increase in phosphate in the urine, the terms hypophosphatemia and "phosphaturia" are sometimes considered interchangeable. However, there do exist other causes of hypophosphatemia besides phosphaturia.
